Is coconut butter the same as coconut oil?
No. Coconut butter is made from the whole meat of the coconut, which has been pureed into a thick, creamy nut-butter. Coconut oil is the oil that has been extracted from the meat. Coconut butter is the same concept as any other nut butter (peanut, almond, etc), although it will have a different texture and consistency.
How do I use coconut butter?
While commonly used as a spread or condiment, it is absolutely possible to cook and bake with coconut butter, although some experimenting may be necessary. You can also find suggested uses here, on our Facebook page, Instagram, and on our recipe blog. You can also just eat it straight from the jar. Seriously.
There is a layer of oil on top of the coconut butter. Is this normal?
Yes, oil separation is natural. Stir very well before using, making sure to get the oil completely mixed back in, otherwise you will be left with some very dry coconut at the bottom of your jar.
I opened my jar and there are some white crystalized-looking snowflake things on top of the coconut butter. What are they?
Not to worry. That's just the oil that has hardened at the top. This generally happens with the Sweet Almond blend.
Help! My coconut butter is way too hard!
Depending on the temperature, coconut butter may be smooth and liquidy or solid. This is completely normal. In cooler temperatures, it will likely be solid and will not be a spreadable consistency. To remedy this, run the jar under warm water or put it in a pan of warm water on the stove for a few minutes. It will soften right up. You can also microwave it for about 20 seconds (more or less depending on your microwave), but take care as it does soften very quickly.
